Swimming Pool Filter

Porex engineers save manufacturer of swimming pool filters from drowning in filter inefficiency and contaminants with a novel filter design. Along with providing superior durability and efficiency, the Porex filter is much easier to handle and clean.

Design Challenge:
A manufacturer of cartridge filtration systems for swimming pools approached Porex at a trade show looking for a filter media that was durable and cleanable. Their existing filter was manufactured from a tightly pleated polyester that contained several additional layers of support media. Wrapped around a punched PVC , the filter media was very difficult to and trapped contaminants between the filters many components. The desired filtration solution revolved around a robust filtration media that offered superior filtration efficiencies, durability, and aesthetic consumer appeal.

Solution:
Porex engineers selected a polyethylene media, for its compatibility with common pool cleaning chemicals as well as its cost competitive price structure. , engineers focused on maximizing the surface area of the filterThis was accomplished through the creation of a radial-swept molded pleat capable of improving liquid flow rates, particulate loadings, and retention efficiencies as compared to the manufacturers existing pleated polyester design. This geometrical achievement was critical to the filter’s successful design as Porex’s molded solution embodied an effective surface area ten times that of the existing polyester filter.

Result:
Innovative design and the benefits of porous plastic resulted in a rigid, lightweight cartridge that is easy to clean and handle. Further, through the use of molding capabilities, Porex engineers created a two-component seamless did not require a cage, core, or additional media support layers.
